The Nature Conservancy (YAY PLANET EARTH)

I’ve always been passionate about preserving the planet for other generations, but in a small, first grade coloring page sort of way. I recycle, I plant trees in the yard, we only have one car, we live in a tinyyyyy house, I bike a lot of places…you know, that sort of thing. But then I started to realize that most definitely isn’t enough. This planet is starting to boil and it is screaming out for help. But what can I do besides those small, seemingly trite things? I’m not about to go set up camp in a tree somewhere (it’s impractical for me but does sound pretty glorious for at least an hour or two) or row a boat around the world talking about conservation (this one is harder for someone who gets sea sick just thinking about boating lol) but I can give what I can to organizations who have researched, studied and practiced the best ways to help our planet. I can help spread the word so others might get on board. I can advocate for our lands and waters…cause our planet LITERALLY depends on it. For now, I’m starting small because it’s a really big sacrifice for my very, very small business, but in time, I’m hoping I can donate more of my income and gather others to join me in this fight for our lives.

The Nature Conservancy has the follow goals (and I am 100% on board):

  1. Tackle Climate Change.

Climate change isn’t a distant threat—it is happening now. The past decade has been hotter than any other time in recorded history. The impacts of climate change include more extreme weather and natural disasters, chronic drought & economic instability. To match the urgency of this crisis, we're deploying innovative solutions that maximize nature's ability to fight climate change while bolstering resilience for our most precious ecosystems and vulnerable communities. Together, we can halt the worst impacts and shape a better 2030 and beyond.

2. Protect Land and Water.

We’re facing dual threats with the climate crisis and extreme loss of biodiversity, and we need clean water and healthy lands. In the next decade, we're working to protect ourselves and our planet by conserving 650 million hectares of healthy land, 30 million hectares of freshwater, and 4 billion hectares of oceans. Through protected areas, sustainable fishing, forest management, and working with Indigenous peoples, we're taking action to shape a better future for people and the planet.

3. Provide Food and Water Sustainability.

Food demand is expected to increase by more than 50% in just the next 30 years as the world’s population continues to grow. Despite the barriers, we provide the science, tools, and partnerships that influence decision making. The goal? To conserve nearly 10 billion acres of ocean, 1.6 billion acres of land, and 620,000 miles of rivers, all of which contribute to our global food requirements. We intend to achieve this ambitious goal through new and better-managed protected areas, global-scale sustainable fishing, restoring working lands, innovative financing, partnering with communities and Indigenous peoples, and positive policy changes.

4. Build Healthy Cities.

Cities are growing—fast. By 2050, two-thirds of the world’s population will live in urban areas. The actions we take over this next decade will define the planet's path over the next century. The Nature Conservancy is urgently taking on the dual threats of biodiversity loss and the climate crisis, maximizing resilience and benefits for communities. What we achieve is just as important as how. By letting science guide our focus and equity guide our execution, we can shape a better 2030 for our planet.
