A lot of small businesses had to pivot and change the way they do business practically overnight, including PAGEFIFTYFIVE and Makerfolk (the shop I co-own in Old Town Fort Collins). It seems like things are happening and changing so quickly and I'm doing my best to keep up, but ooof...this has not been an easy challenge for me.
Honestly, I'm really okay with the staying home part. I'm an introvert at heart, I love my home, my wife is working from home too so we're together, my dog is happy and we have a nice house (albeit a littttttle small now that were all here 24/7) and a backyard that has been neglected for a while now-so I've found myself settling into this new normal fairly well. I work hard on the websites during the day, I pick weeds and plan gardens on the weekends, I go for long walks in the evening-if there wasn't a major pandemic going on in this world, things would be okay.
The part that has been very, very difficult is where I'm trying to run 2 businesses that depend on human interaction, local shopping, in-person markets, and support from the community in order to maintain any sense of financial normalcy. Welp, the world has essentially come to a standstill and though I respect and stand behind that decision 100%-my income has essentially come to a standstill as well...and that has been a hard pill to swallow. I try to put things into perspective and I feel so lucky and privileged to be in the position that I'm in-but bills still need to get paid, so I'm working like hell to pivot and stay above water. Here are some new things that I've created in the last few weeks:
A keep in touch special-I can write a note for you and send it directly to the recipient (shipping charges will be refunded. Or, I can send you stamps so you don't have to run out to get them. Win win :)
A curated selection of cards called Stay Home Stay Connected meant to help you stay in touch during this time. Nothing beats a little PAGEFIFTYFIVE snailmail to brighten your day! AND BONUS, you'll receive a free mini card if you order any of these cards!
A new line of scratch-off cards!! I might love these more than anything I've created. I mean...I might be exaggerating, but I love them so much! Secret messages are always a win in my book and now you can create them yourself!
I've also created a bunch of cards in mini size. I love a good little card to put onto a package, include for a gift, put into your neighbor's door or put on a bench for a stranger to find! Plus, they fit a gift card perfectly!
We've also added an entire site full of items to Makerfolk and we're adding items daily! We've got gardening items, cards, prints, baby items, candles, jewelry, CBD products and more!
And last but not least, I created a video over the weekend and it's maybe my new favorite hobby. Check it out on Instagram and look for another one coming this weekend too!
I hope you are all doing okay, staying safe and healthy and doing the best you can with what you have! These are crazy times and I think we all have to find the way of life that feels good to us personally. This week I felt a bit productive, next week...I might sit on the couch and eat bonbons all week. Who knows!
